An hour does go by fast. We bounced from checks arriving in the mail, or not; to the safety or not of car and plane crashes, to automation in cars and the rest of civilization, to who is going to pay for child care and affordable housing. We even ended up talking about businesses doing business around the moon.
We don’t start out with a theme in mind, or even a plan. Our grandest plan is to have conversation. It just happens that the topics link up, which is also a sign of how interconnected everything is.
Entire businesses are built by working on the fringes, whether that is the detritus from wrecked trailers or new satellite constellations around our biggest satellite. But as industries shift, particularly to automation and AI, fewer people are making money that can be taxed, so various benefits are harder to access. Thanks, Bill Gates, for inspiring a thread on shifting that tax burden as the revenues shift. If a business reduces the number of employees, but doesn’t reduce their revenues, can their taxes make up the lost income and payroll tax?
And, do we need kids? (Yes. Duh.)
