Intriguing Creativity

How do these things get started? Steve Smolinsky and I, Tom Trimbath, have launched a podcast, Intriguing Creativity. Sounds simple, but even simple ideas can have long histories. Let’s take this backwards.

Among my many projects I also produce several blogs, but there is one key blog, my first blog, TrimbathCreative, a blog that was built because I wrote a book about frugal personal finance, Dream. Invest. Live. It began when the book was published, naturally; but coincidentally it was on election day for Barakck Obama and the start of the Great Recession. That last one was terrible timing for my book. So it goes, but the blog was launched and I continue contributing to it. I knew Steve, so Steve read my blog.

Back then, Steve had an even more successful blog, BenariLTD.com (fact check). It was about business and finance and culture and people and… I knew Steve, I read Steve’s blog.

We’ve known each other for a while for more reasons than that, but that should suffice for this post.

Steve and I talk, as friends do. Near the end of 2023, Steve called me up to compliment me on one of my posts. He also said something like, “You should do this as a podcast.” I said, “Thank you.”, and in my head I said, ‘Great, another good idea to add to all of the other fruitless good ideas I am working on.’ Note, that book I mentioned, Dream. Invest. Live., was written by request. It wasn’t my idea, but many friends liked the way I described finance. One of them was a NYT best selling author, so I took that as a HINT. Lots of effort. Nice compliments. Too few sales.

As I thought about ‘fruitless good idea’, I thought, ‘I’m not doing this alone.’ “OK, Steve, when are We going to get started.” Why not share the load, and engage one of the most interesting and engaging thinkers I know? 

Skip many details, including a lot of work coming up with the name, and here we are, a podcast called, Intriguing Creativity. We are fascinated by the world. It is intriguing. We are fascinated by creative people. Rather than rant, we are more likely to rave, or at least build upon the positive which can be highlighted at recognizing terrific circumstance that inspired action. By the way, terrific in this case is emphasizing the root of terrific which is terror. Incredible applies too, because so much news is about things that are hard to believe someone would do such a thing: hard to be believed, not credible, incredible.

As much as it would be nice to say we thought through that name it really came up during a frustrated conversation when life was being discourteous. (#MassiveUnderstatement)

We don’t know what our topics will be, but they will probably be related to intriguing creativity in business, economies, societies, science, culture, etc. That gives us enough leeway to talk about anything.

This first episode is a model of our intent. It is unscripted, rambling, energetic, humorous, and a Before episode from which we shall learn to create eventually much more polished After episodes.
